I am making a career change... I would like to be a hairstylist, any advice?

I went to the Unversity of Michigan, then became a sales rep... had the job I SHOULD have wanted, but got no enjoyment out of it even though I was very good at sales. During this time i've had off, i've decided that I would really enjoy being a hair stylist and I think specifically a hair colorist. What advice does anyone have on picking a school (preferably in michigan), starting over at 26, what options I should look into (spa, salon, renting a chair, etc) and also marketing myself once I get thru school (or does anyone offer cheap hair cuts, etc, while they're in school??). Thanks! :)

Career planning is a continuous development process through which we attempt to understand our personal, family, school, work and community experiences and the significance they are likely to have in building career and choice of lifestyle. We need to identify opportunities and to identify options. We need to examine our personal interests and skills as they relate to a variety of career opportunities to help us make appropriate and realistic decisions. Keep in mind that the goal of exploring career is not just employment but a purposeful of integrating our personal interests and values with the kinds of work that are most satisfying for us.

I do not think it is a good thing to do in Michigan. There is an over abundunce of hairstylist for no jobs. However if you are finacially stable aand can go for something to fall back on some day I say go for it it is very fun. I went to the Huron Area Tech center In Bad Axe MI

Hi. Sounds like you are going to do something you truly like. Since you have a good background, I would attempt to find my way into a spa. They are the nicest jobs, with decent money. You could always rent a chair, build a clientel and then try to move up. Make sure this is what you want to do before you make the switch, go observe a saloon for a day and speak to the workers there. It will be tough to get by on a stylist's wages unless you get very popular. Good luck.

Good choice, start out at a well know Spa as this will give you a good reputation %26amp; name for your self, and once qualified practice on family %26amp; friends. Make sure you are placed in a well known School, I cant advice on that as I dont live in America, I live in Australia.Word of mouth will get you your clietelle, if you prove you are very very good at what you do, and do it with confidence, differance and a great imagination. Always keep up with the changers %26amp; trends, even if you have to go to expo's yourself %26amp; most of all enjoy your self. I wish you all the luck on your new career:)
